Insight into the noble crayfish morphological diversity: a geometric morphometric approach.

2022

The noble crayfish (Astacus astacus), a keystone species of high ecological, economic, and cultural importance in Europe, is threatened due to a long-term population decline caused by anthropogenic pressure on its habitats, the presence of non-indigenous invasive crayfish species and climate change. Since the effective protection of the remaining populations requires conservation measures based on the comprehensive knowledge of the species, including good understanding of its genetic and morphological variability, our aim was to study morphological features of the noble crayfish in Croatia using geometric morphometrics for the first time. We applied two-dimensional geometric morphometrics t…

Biological responses to high-frequency sound in a freshwater crayfish, Cherax quadricarinatus

2023

Anthropogenic noise is recognised as an important environmental stressor that can have longterm negative consequences on species. In recent years, there has been increasing attention to the potential negative impact of noise pollution on species, with great concern for the importance of impacts on aquatic animal life. This study examined the effects of acoustic stress on the biochemical parameters of the freshwater crayfish Cherax quadricarinatus. The experiment was conducted in a tank equipped with an audio and video recording system using ten groups (five control and five test) of three adult crayfish (30 animals in total). The animals in the test group were exposed to acoustic signals [a…

Do native white-clawed crayfish impact macroinvertebrate assemblages in Mediterranean limestone headwaters?

2019

Crayfish are among the largest aquatic macroinvertebrates in rivers and streams. Their trophic ecology is important for the understanding of the functioning of benthic communities. This is relevant in key areas, such as headwaters, as they partly condition the processes occurring downstream. To shed light on the effects of native white-clawed crayfish,Austropotamobius pallipes, on local macroinvertebrate assemblages from running headwaters, a three-month mesocosm-based field study was designed. Collection and subsequent analysis of benthic samples under different crayfish density levels yielded a set of metrics indicative of short-term impacts at general and taxonomic scales. Neither signif…
